My favorite opening joke when I give presentations at industry conferences.
An oldie but a goody that was today (sort of) validated by "Helicopter" Ben Bernanke at the Boston University commencement and reported in the Wall Street Journal.
“Like weather forecasters, economic forecasters must deal with a system that is extraordinarily complex, that is subject to random shocks, and about which our data and understanding will always be imperfect.
In some ways, predicting the economy is even more difficult than forecasting the weather, because an economy is not made up of molecules whose behavior is subject to the laws of physics, but rather of human beings who are themselves thinking about the future and whose behavior may be influenced by the forecasts that they or others make.”
Looks like I'll need to find some new material.

National Weather Service (US) Releases Spring 2009 Weather Outlook: Severe Flooding Risk Projected for the Upper Midwest
The US National Weather Service released their official Spring weather outlook on Thursday.
The big story and major concern continues to be the flood risk in the upper Midwest which they are warning could rival the Grand Forks flooding of 1997.
Flooding in the upper Midwest, which could rival the high water levels experienced in 2006 and possibly 1997, and continued drought in the South and West are among the highlights in NOAA’s National Weather Service Spring Outlook issued today.
More to come on the potential economic impact of this as events unfold.

UK Met Office Forecast for the 2009 Winter: "... likely to be milder than average."
Doh!
Following is the official government forecast published in September 2008 for the current winter season in the UK:
The Met Office forecast for the coming winter suggests it is, once
again, likely to be milder than average. It is also likely that the
coming winter will be drier than last year.
And noted below is the current forecast for the balance of the winter:
Mean temperatures are likely to be average or below average for the
rest of winter over the UK.
As a meteorologist myself, I hate to throw rocks at the Met Office knowing how challenging it is to develop a seasonal forecast, particularly for a relatively small geographic area. In this instance, the forecast was likely weighted heavily by the warming trends over the past few years; this year, unfortunately, the warming bias in the model appears to have busted the forecast.
