Following is the official government forecast published in September 2008 for the current winter season in the UK:
The Met Office forecast for the coming winter suggests it is, once
again, likely to be milder than average. It is also likely that the
coming winter will be drier than last year.
And noted below is the current forecast for the balance of the winter:
Mean temperatures are likely to be average or below average for the
rest of winter over the UK.
As a meteorologist myself, I hate to throw rocks at the Met Office knowing how challenging it is to develop a seasonal forecast, particularly for a relatively small geographic area. In this instance, the forecast was likely weighted heavily by the warming trends over the past few years; this year, unfortunately, the warming bias in the model appears to have busted the forecast.
