There has been a lot of Strum und Drang happening lately regarding our ability to observe, forecast, and communicate the weather, particularly from a political context, much of it dumb and self-inflicted.

Still, I remain optimistic about our increasing ability to observe and predict the weather and, most importantly, to understand and communicate the implications of the forecast on consumers and businesses.

AI and weather forecasting …

Every week, I’m reading about breakthroughs in our ability to use AI to cost-effectively predict the weather at a very fine geographical resolution and with accuracy levels approaching those of the best physics models.

I was reminded of this when Microsoft published its latest summary on the success of its new weather forecasting model, Aurora.
