Soaring temperatures sent more than 100 people to emergency rooms in New York City for heat-related illnesses on Tuesday, the hottest day in more than a decade, according to data from city health officials.

The severe conditions underscore the public health challenges posed by rising temperatures in densely populated urban environments.

Temperatures on Tuesday reached 99 degrees Fahrenheit at the city's official weather station at Belvedere Castle in Central Park, a mark not recorded there since 2012.
